The Government has prepared a draft law extending maternity leave which will be accepted this month. The planned change in women’s retirement rules is also on the agenda of the Parliament on Monday, which will allow the women to retire after 40 years of work. To be able to finance sucha surplus of expenses the Government is planning to raise the pension contributions from 9.5% to 10%.

According to the plans, the maternity leave will be again 3 years instead of the current 2 years. At the same time the legistlation would restrict the employment of mothers as a precondition for maternity benefit. The current rules allow unlimited working hours for mothers after the child gets 1 year old. The new proposal will give maternity benefit to mothers who works at home unlimited time, or works out of home but maximum 30 hours per week. The proposal is expected to be accepted this month.

Women with at least 40 years of service could go on pension regardless of their age. To cover such a increase in the expenses, the pension contribution rate would be increased from the current 9.5% to 10%.
